California Man Objects To Doctor Listing Homosexuality As ‘Chronic Condition’

A Southern California man has been diagnosed as gay. More specifically the man – Matthew Moore, age 45 – was listed as having “homosexual behavior” as a chronic condition, which even had its own medical code of 302.

No doubt more frustrating for Moore, the doctor declared it to be up for debate how one treats this condition of “homosexual behavior.” According to the article above, Mr. Moore declared his frustration and requested back the copay he submitted. After writing a letter to the organization, he received a letter of full apology in return.

Considering that this can happen in Southern California, of all places, and in the 21st century, it wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination that things of this sort happen all the time in most other states. Mr. Moore himself questioned how it would make a gay teen feel to receive a diagnosis like this – a pertinent question to ask.

It’s important to remember that although neither the American Psychiatric Association or the American Psychological Association classify homosexuality as a mental illness of any sort, it wasn’t terribly long ago that they did. It was only 40 years ago this year that the former removed homosexuality from their list of mental illnesses and 38 for the latter. It took the international World Health Organization until 1990 to remove it from theirs.

Remembering the stigma that we faced before in society is important for the future. Hopefully, Matthew Moore’s experience won’t have to be repeated by anyone, especially someone in a more vulnerable mental state. Thanks to someone confident enough in his identity to stand up and point out how wrong this is, there’s a good chance that someone else will be spared the experience in the future. We appreciate it, Matthew.

  2. I can still remember when my cousin was involuntarily committed to a mental institution for that condition, in the 1950s-early 60s. We’ve come a long way since then, but obviously not far enough.

    • Pat, my roommates grandfather was committed for the same reason. I can’t even imagine the frustration of being a perfectly healthy, mentally stable gay person locked up because of sexual orientation. Yes, we have come a long way, but not in Russia and certainly not in the eyes of evangelicals (I find it safer to refer to the evangelicals to avoid insulting actual Christians).

  4. Headline is misleading. “Homosexual behavior” is NOT the same as Homosexuality. Stop feeding the frenzy and learn reading comprehension, so-called “young progressive voices”. Young shouldn’t equate to immature.

    • Actually, Shawn, homosexual behavior is a natural part of homosexuality. Also, we have a character limit on headlines. If you don’t like what we write, feel free to leave.

    • What other behavior would one expect from a homosexual? What kind of doctor would even give such a diagnosis? That was the objection here, not the difference in meanings. The last paragraph clearly shows that Matthew is a homosexual, so the diagnosis was obviously made due to his homosexuality. There. Both words apply here and the headline is not misleading.

  5. As someone who would be classified as “heterosexual”, this kind of stuff makes me so mad!
I have thought about this for many years, and I have come to the conclusion that NO-ONE is born heterosexual. We are all born with some tendency to be both, but some of us have more x or y chromosomes and some of us have more testosterone or estrogen so it is harder to ‘fit’ into a society that insists that the middle-ground is the only ‘normal’ condition.
Just because the majority of people are heterosexual does not mean that the minorities are ‘abnormal’, it just means that they are not heterosexual!!
In exactly the same way that we now know that during the years of slavery we (the white oppressors) were wrong to thing that being black made a person less of a human being. They were not abnormal, they were just black!
People need to get over it and learn to accept that some people are gay and some are not and that is all there is to it!
Let’s stop wasting time and money on a non-issue and put our energy into fixing the REAL problems in this country!!

    • Interesting comment – I have come to the conclusion that sexuality is a continuum. There are the masculine men at one end and the super-feminine women at the other, everyone else falls somewhere in between. True bis are right in the middle. And just because a body-builder manly man SEEMS to fall at the super-manly end of the spectrum, he may only be trying to project that image, and vice versa for women. Dunno, could be wrong, my mind takes some interesting directions sometimes – lol.
